Local SEO for Nigerian Businesses: How to Show Up When People Search Near You
Most Nigerian businesses are invisible on Google. Here is a practical, no-fluff guide to getting found by customers in your city.

When someone in Lagos types "web designer near me" or "best suya in Lekki" into Google, a list of businesses appears. Those businesses did not end up there by accident.
Local SEO is the practice of making sure your business shows up when people in your area search for what you offer. It is one of the highest-value things a small business can invest time in, because the people searching are already ready to buy.
Here is how to do it.
Step 1: Set up your Google Business Profile properly
This is the single most important thing you can do for local search. If you have not done it, stop reading and go to google.com/business right now.
Once you have claimed or created your profile:
- Add your real business name, no keyword stuffing
- Set your primary category accurately (this matters a lot)
- Add your full address or service area
- Add your phone number and website
- Upload at least 10 photos, including your storefront, team and work
- Add your opening hours
- Write a description that includes what you do and where you operate
Businesses with complete profiles rank higher. It is that direct.
Step 2: Get reviews and respond to them
Google uses reviews as a ranking signal. More reviews, higher average rating and active responses from the business all help.
Ask every satisfied customer to leave a Google review. Send them the direct link. Make it as easy as possible.
When you get a review (positive or negative) respond to it. A business that responds to reviews signals to Google that it is active and engaged.
Step 3: Make sure your website mentions where you are
Your website needs to tell Google where you operate. This sounds obvious but most small business websites do not do it.
At minimum:
- Include your city and state in your page title and meta description
- Mention your location naturally in your homepage content
- Add a contact page with your full address
- Embed a Google Map on your contact page
If you serve multiple areas, create a separate page for each one. "Web designer in Victoria Island" and "web designer in Ikeja" should be separate pages, each with unique content.
Step 4: Get listed in local directories
Google cross-references your business information across the web. When your name, address and phone number are consistent across multiple directories, it builds trust.
Get listed on:
- VConnect
- Businesses.com.ng
- Nigeria Galleria
- Yelp Nigeria
- Facebook Business
Make sure your name, address and phone number are identical on every platform. Even small differences (like "Street" vs "St") can confuse the algorithm.
Step 5: Create content about local topics
A blog that covers topics relevant to your city and industry builds local authority over time.
If you are a photographer in Abuja, write about "best outdoor photography locations in Abuja" or "how to plan a product shoot in Abuja." These are things people in your city search for and ranking for them puts you in front of a warm audience.
You do not need to publish every week. One good piece per month, focused on real questions your customers ask, is enough to see results over 3 to 6 months.
What not to waste time on
- Buying backlinks from random websites
- Keyword stuffing your Google Business description
- Creating fake reviews (Google removes them and can penalise your profile)
- Paying for "guaranteed first page" SEO services that do not explain their methods
